The Museum is fortunate in having the support of the Friends of Weymouth Museum, a registered charity (no. 900003) formed in 1989, which meets in the Museum Resource Centre.
There are usually several meetings and outside visits each year. Members also receive four newsletters during the year, which detail their events programme and dates and venues of meetings and outside visits. Articles by members on their researches, letters and queries are also published in the newsletter, along with reports on the activities of the Friends and details of forthcoming Museum events.
Other benefits of membership include a 10% discount in Brewers Quay shops, reduced admission to the Timewalk and personal injury& public liability insurance cover for volunteer work within the Museum.
The Friends are actively involved in many facets of the museum's work as well as organising a programme of talks and visits. These include assisting with creating displays and exhibits, and with mounting exhibitions and other projects, such as:
The Local History Unit | |
Creating a photographic record of Weymouth's buildings
Cataloguing the Museum collection
Making cabinets and other practical work
Creating new displays |
Fundraising is critical to the future of the museum, and the Friends have raised many thousands of pounds over the years to help purchase artefacts as well as equipment for the Resource Centre and Local History Unit. In November 2005 they were awarded a grant of £3,141 for a Museum computer network from Awards for All, South West. In 2009 the Friends purchased new chairs, a public address system, and four new televisions for audio-visual displays in the Museum. The Friends are also funding research into the meetings of the Board of Guardians.
