Gallery 1

The major display in this gallery relates to Georgian Weymouth. As  a result of the patronage of the King, the town of Weymouth & Melcombe Regis was transformed into an elegant and fashionable seaside resort. The centrepiece of the display is the large, equestrian portrait of George III by Sir William Beechey.

There is a case devoted to the Borough Regalia, which includes the robes and various symbols of office as well as presentation silver.

Scenes of old Weymouth are portrayed in a selection of pictures and prints from the Bussell Collection.

Mr. W Keates had a cobblers shop in Williams Avenue, the contents of which were donated to the Museum, and he is portrayed working at his sewing machine amongst the contents his shop.

Social and economic themes are continued with displays which include a Victorian kitchen, and a collection of surgical equipment and medical items with its adjoining video display of pill making in the Victorian era. Other displays relate to the former Hope Square Brewery fire brigade, and rail and bus transport.

A unique piece of sporting history is represented by the display dedicated to Pat Dunn. It tells  the story of her long and brave nine-year battle to become the first officially qualified woman Football Association referee.

Recently, a large model of H.M.S. Weymouth, a First World War cruiser, has been installed in the gallery.
