Ellis 1 modThe Service aims to provide information on all the museum’s holdings as well as answering enquiries on the local and family history of Weymouth and the surrounding district.  The service manages the Local History Collection which includes original documents, maps, plans, press cuttings, photographs, postcards, posters, trade directories and other reference material.

The Collection also includes microfilm copies of records of the old borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis and Portland Urban District Council, which in some cases dates back to the 14th century.

The Local History Collection can be contacted by anyone interested in researching the local area or the people who have lived or worked here.
Access to the Collection and the other museum collections can usually be arranged by appointment (open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10.30am to 4pm).  Access is free and no charge is usually made for answering written or telephone enquiries, although charges may be made for extended searches and for copying material in the Collection.
