Teas & Talks – “Brewing in Weymouth” – From Beer to Mineral Waters

Monday, November 21, 2022

This talk is presented by David Riches who was for many years Collection Manager at the museum and is a past Chair of the Friends of Weymouth Museum.

The talk begins by outlining the process of brewing beer and the development of the breweries in Hope Square before mentioning the other beer breweries with a presence in Weymouth including the Reynolds Brewery in St Thomas Street.  Whilst the history of the Devenish & Groves breweries is well documented, very little has been written about the brewing of ginger beer and the making of mineral waters in the town.  However, there are many bottles bearing the names of these firms still in existence in museum and private collections and these, together with the advertisements appearing in town guides and directories have been used to piece together the story of these.

The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street.  Tea & biscuits will be served from 2pm and the talk will begin at 2.30pm.

Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
