Teas & Talks – MFA Bowl, St Nicholas Street, Weymouth – An archaeological investigation

Monday, October 23, 2023

This talk by Richard McConnell will share the results of a preliminary archaeological investigation in 2022 by Context One Heritage & Archaeology with the help of Dig The Street volunteers at the site of the former MFA Bowl in St Nicholas Street.  Excavation revealed well-preserved remains dating right back to the foundation of Melcombe Regis in the late 13th century alongside a Georgian chapel and a Victorian theatre.  Combined, the work has demonstrated an exciting potential for future discoveries on the site.

Richard has been an archaeologist for nearly 30 years and co-founded Context One 25 years ago.  Context One are based in North Dorset and have always worked in the South West, with a keen and active interest in the archaeology of Weymouth.  Some of their other work in Dorset has involved the excavation of a medieval manor at Putton Lane, Chickerell and a Roman road and settlement at the rear of Dorset Museum as part of their major programme of expansion.  Richard represents Context One on the Dorset Archaeological Forum and they were delighted to have recently won the Weymouth Civic Society award for Heritage.

The talk will be held in Hope United Reformed Church at 8 Trinity Street.  Tea & biscuits will be served from 2pm and the talk will begin at 2.30pm.

Tickets will be available on the door and are £2.00 for members of the Friends and £3.00 for visitors. (Exact change would be appreciated, if possible).
