A short time ago readers will have seen a wonderfully atmospheric photo of High Street taken just before the Second World War.
In sad contrast is one taken in the 1950s from a point just east of that one, showing the Weymouth Arms, which had suffered from bomb blast in 1940, Olivers’ Shop and J.S. Oliver’s fish merchants minus its roof. Next is a scrap store owned by Louis Basso, who had in the 1920s built an additional storey in brick on to what was a much older building.
Sadly a scene of dereliction and decay. In a more enlightened era this would be the subject of a comprehensive conservation scheme covering the whole of High Street and North Quay.
