FRANCHISE STREET WEYMOUTH

This photo shows the transition between the old and the new Chapelhay and was taken in late 1956 or very early 1957.

On the left  of the picture is no. 82 Franchise Street which still exists. It is on the corner of a service road to Chapelhay Heights

On the extreme right is the first block of the Chapelhay Heights development and the writer remembers going round the show house in the block in April 1957.

In the middle of the picture are some properties which were soon to be demolished and the site would be occupied by another block of Chapelhay Heights. The ground floor of Holgate’s shop was occupied by A. Skillman an electrical engineer who later moved across the road and ran a useful convenience store. He was well known as the only person in Chapelhay who ran a Rolls -Royce!
