Sugar’em Shorey was a well known local character.
He lived with his sister in a disused toll house on Preston Road, which had been the family home for over 100 years. Travellers would pass this little college lit dimly by oil lamps which gave an old world charm.
His ran a horse drawn bus service from Weymouth to Upwey Wishing Well, which he continued when his father died. His nickname derived from one of his expressions used by his father, meaning that he had bettered a rival.
In the winter he supplied and delivered logs and the site bore evidence of this.
The property had no electricity, running water and main drainage.
In 1959 the property was condemned and he and his sister were rehoused in a prefab at Littlemoor Crescent. Sadly they did not survive long in their new environment.
