ELECTRIC HOUSE WESTHAM ROAD

Elecricity came to Weymouth in 1904, initiated by the Borough Council, celebrated by a banquet at the Hotel Burdon,(now the Prince Regent.)

AC generators were installed in the 1920s and electricity showrooms opened in 1933. Electricity was nationalised in 1948. In 1966 the DC current was switched off and the power station in Stavordale Road ceased operating, electricity being supplied from Poole Power Station.

The only tangible reminder of this operation is the impressive showroom, now operating as a convenience store. The Electra Hotel was  built at the same time.

Weymouth Museum has been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

We have also benefitted from the active support of The Friends of Weymouth Museum.
