We are now in 1961 when extensive works were being carried out around the Ferry Steps area and passengers wishing to use the Harbour Ferry (priced at 2d) or a See the Ships trip round Portland Harbour had to clamber over temporary structures to get on board.
In the background is Cosens’s slip where their paddle steamer P.S. Consul is receiving attention in readiness for the forthcoming season.
To the left are the Army Married Quarters which had been purchased by the Council along with the Nothe Fort the previous year. The Married Quarters subsequently demolished, although one thinks that they might have been a useful addition to the Council’s housing stock.
