How this street scene has changed since the photo was taken in about 1962.
Many older residents will remember Hallett and Son, high class furnishers with its splendid shop front. This building, after structural alterations, is now occupied by Santander. Reflected in the windows is the sign of Merriken the baker on the opposite side of the street. He died in 1961, his business being acquired by Dorset Cake Company.
Next to Halletts is the long established firm of Milledge and Son, Auctioneers and Estate Agents. This would later be taken over Hy. Duke, and is now Ladbrookes. Next comes Gregory’s, Pharmaceutical Chemist. This firm looks as if it has just closed down as the premises were subsumed by the National Provincial Bank, now the National Westminster.
