An early 20th century photo shows 829 Dorchester Road as the Upwey Bakery owned by E. Gutt, with the delivery van in the extreme right of the picture.
Upwey was very much a separate community as it was not taken into the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis until 1933.
By 1937 Kelly’s Directory shows the bakery being run by Owen Willliam Baker, as it was in 1948 but it was later taken over as a branch of B. Smith, the large bakery firm in Weymouth with premises in Abbotsbury Road. Pupils from Weymouth Grammar School would go there to buy for a modest price a bag of “stales.” Its use as a bakery continued until the 1970s.
