LONG LOST VIEW OF CUSTOM HOUSE  QUAY

This view from 1957/8 shows a scene which would shortly disappear.

On the left is the splendid warehouse, shamefully demolished in late 1958 on the grounds that it was unsafe. Eric Ricketts, the well known and respected architect told me that it wasn’t. Next is the office of W.G. Taylor, builders of houses in Southill and the now demolished Council Office on North Quay. The firm closed down in the early 1970s. Finally in the scene the Ship Inn which still exists.

The site of the warehouse lay vacant for many years until an extension to the Ship Inn was built which now occupies the stretch from Maiden Street to St Mary Street.
