MARKS AND SPENCER

Marks and Spencer opened their Store in St Mary Street in 1932, occupying nos. 6, 7 and 8. Acquisition of adjoining properties either side led to an extension in 1955, and further expansion including additional sales facilities on the first floor took place in 1978/9.

Now Marks and Spencer have received planning permission to build a greatly expanded facility on Mercery Road, which will add greatly to the shopping experience.

Here is picture of the original store as it existed between 1932 and 1955.
