THE PHOENIX BUILDING NORTH QUAY

Some residents may remember the Phoenix building which stood at the end of North Quay and High Street.

It was built in late Georgian times as a warehouse and Eric Ricketts describes it as ”a significant structure architecturally.” In the 1950s and early 1960s it was used as a taxi office and as a fruit and vegetable shop but  by the time the photo was taken, probably in the early 1960s these uses had ceased prior to its demolition in 1965. The writer remembers that it was not the easiest property to demolish!

It is a pity that it was demolished as with careful conservation it would have been an ideal candidate for conversion into flats

The advertisements in the photo are interesting, with cigarettes, a Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Concert, a dance at the Waverley Arms and wrestling at the Pier Bandstand and other attractions.
