TRAFFIC CHAOS! 🚦

This scene dates from the 1960s, judging by the cars. Westham Road was two-way, as was St Thomas Street.

A Harris pie van attempts to enter Westham Road, while a Vauxhall Victor and a Ford Cortina wait patiently (or otherwise!), alongside a scooterist and a Co-op lorry stacked with milk bottles.

A friend of the writer, who worked in a shop by the King’s Statue during school holidays, recalled that summer traffic around the Statue was often heavy — but usually sorted itself out. If the police stepped in, however, it often became even more chaotic!
