On 28 May 1944, just prior to D-DAY a bombing raid took place which severely damaged Weymouth and District Hospital and a number of other properties nearby. Three members of the Rescue Service were killed.
It is believed that 19 bombs were dropped.
One of the unexploded bombs landed in Melcombe Avenue. And the picture shows the bomb, with Inspector Martyn, Supt. Knight and the Bomb Disposal Squad. The squad was led by Lt. R.A.J. Woods of Dorchester who had been the Bomb Disposal Officer for Dorset since 1942 and in 1945 was awarded the George Medal for his services.
