WEYMOUTH BUS STATION

Weymouth Bus Station in Edward Street and Commercial Road was built in 1929. At lunchtime on 21 October 1940 a single enemy plane dropped one oil and three high explosive bombs on the area. These demolished the garage and eight houses, killing five people. A further 19 houses were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished.

Rebuilding the bus station took time in view of other matters requiring attention post war and it was not started until 1955.

Mant people will recall catching a bus there in the 1960s, including the 22A to Portland and the 34 to Salisbury. In view of the state of the floor made slippery with oil and water it would now be regarded as a health hazard.

The photo show the damage caused by the bomb.
