Maiden Street Methodist Church was built in 1866-7 to the designs of Foster and Wood of Bristol. It was the principal Methodist church in the Circuit. It had seated accommodation for 1,000 people. It underwent internal alterations in 1955 and a £160,000 restoration was carried out in 1998-9.
Sadly in January 2002 it was the victim of fire, leaving it as a roofless shell. The cause of the fire was never determined but the schoolroom below had only a couple of days before been painted throughout.
The cost of rebuilding led the Methodist circuit to build a new church in Melcombe Avenue on the site of the former Christian Science church.
The old site remained undeveloped although a number of schemes were proposed and the building changed hands a number of times.
At present work is progressing well on a scheme of development using the original walls.
Here the photo shows the fire well underway.
